Rachel Haltom - BK Girl #1

Hi guys, I’m Rachel Haltom! Let me start out by saying how honored I feel to be the first ever Bakpak Girl! I am so excited to get to share my experiences and tips with everyone in the upcoming months and I am thankful that Bakpak Dave has given me the opportunity to do the two things I love most: traveling and writing.

Let me start off by telling you a little bit about myself. I am a student at the University of Kentucky and am a marketing major. I inherited my love for travel from my mother who encouraged me to see the world at a young age. As a kid my mom took me all over the United States and when I turned 15, she took me out of the country for the first time. From the second I stepped on foreign soil I knew that I was born to travel! When I returned home, I promised myself I would go back to Europe after graduating high school, but this time I wanted to do it all on my own. For a year before I left, I researched and planned my three month solo backpacking trip all across Europe. That trip changed my life forever.

During my travels I fell in love with the city of Budapest, Hungary, and European Hostel Culture. In the time I spent at Carpe Noctem Vitae Hostel, I frequently asked myself why hostels aren’t more popular in America with Americans. Because in Europe, they’re cheap, youth centered, and a blast to stay in, Europeans use them all the time. I’ll admit that even though I have been to a lot of places in the United States, I have actually been to more major cities in Europe because it was cheaper. So many people in America never get the opportunity to even see their own country and the thought makes me sad.

My goal is to bring more fun, cost effective and youth focused hostels to America so that future generations of American’s can get to see their own country. This summer, I am traveling back to Budapest to intern at Vitae through my university so that I can learn how to open and manage a hostel the way they do in Europe. By studying hostels across Europe and hopefully Australia in the next few years, I believe I can make this dream a reality. (If you would like to donate to Rachel’s Research to Budapest, you can do so here!

European Countries I have visited include: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.
