Autumn brings cool, crisp days and cold nights to Canada, along with a fiery swath of leaf peepage all over the country. Bring your warmest clothes as even sunny days can have bitingly cold nights. Colored leaves are best in the eastern part of Canada where the maples bring in deep red hues to complement the yellow and orange. The smell of wood smoke permeates the country as Canadians prepare for the long winter ahead and indulge in hearty dishes like squash casserole and beef stew. Aurora borealis, the northern lights, appear in September and October, when it is still warm enough to hike and camp- so get out there. Autumn in Canada is also the perfect time to enjoy the many microbrews of the country, holed up in a warm tavern playing pool or shooting darts, and don’t miss the game on TV- hockey season begins in September and you will find the whole country glued to the screen to root on their favorite players.

• Try Canada’s burgeoning wine industry during harvest season with tastings at the vineyards of Nova Scotia.
• Have some time on your hands? Hike the Trans Canada trail, or at least a part of it, through an inspiring palette of colorful leaves.
• Plan a peaceful picnic in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, an evergreen oasis of over a thousand acres with a seawall, lighthouse, and totem poles, all right next door to downtown Vancouver.
