Welcome to Canada. It's a huge place to explore so we've put together a selection of some “off--the-beaten-path” destinations. Whether you're looking for a nature experience in one of the many breathtaking national parks, or ocean-based activities or a dose of history and culture, look no further. Best of all, these destinations offer inexpensive hostel, hotel or guesthouse accommodation.
Quebec City, Quebec
To catch a glimpse of real “French Canada” head to Quebec City, just 3hrs northeast of Montreal. Highlights include Old Quebec (the historic district), Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (look out-point over city via cable car), the Citadel Ramparts and the Quebec City Summer Festival featuring 800 artists from around the world. If you are there in winter, check out the Quebec-Canada Ice Hotel, literally made out of ice and snow (you can actually stay there but it’s quite expensive).
New Brunswick
New Brunswick borders Portland, Maine to its west and Quebec to the north. I-95 terminates here just over the border in Maine and runs all the way from Miami in Florida. You are better off leaving I-95 in Bangor, Maine and traveling along the coastal Route 1. Highlights include the Bay of Fundy and Fundy National Park. From New Brunswick, you can access Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Nova Scotia
You can get here via Greyhound, Via Rail , car ferry (via ferry from Bar Harbor, Maine or Saint John, New Brunswick) or by car driving to Sackville in New Brunswick and into Amherst in Nova Scotia. Highlights include Halifax, Yarmouth, Lunenberg Kejimkujik National Park, the Cabot Trail through Cape Breton Highlands and Peggy’s Cove. Halifax, the main town of Nova Scoita, is not only known for its friendly people (some say the friendliest in the world) but its small town charm meets cosmopolitan city atmosphere.
Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island can be accessed via the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick. The main town is Char-lottetown. High-lights include deep sea fishing (a must and very easy), Prince Edward Island National Park and the Confederation Trail, the many lighthouses, and, if you can afford it, a sumptuous lobster dinner!
Edmonton, Alberta
Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, is about 3hrs due north of Calgary. Highlights include Elk Island National Park (45mins), West Edmonton Mall and the Edmonton Space and Science Center.
