Ottawa is the capital of Canada and is conveniently located between Toronto and Montreal. Ottawa will charm you with its European flair, outdoor cafes, markets, Gothic architecture and heritage buildings. It’s also home to the Canadian Parliament, a must see, which you can tour for free.

Car 5hrs east of Toronto, 2.5hrs west of Montreal, 2hrs northeast of Kingston, 3.5hrs north of Syracuse.

Tour of Parliament Hill (tickets available from 9am onwards); National Gallery of Canada (free Thurs after 6pm); Canadian Museum of Civilization and Canada War Museum (free Thurs after 4pm); Canadian Museum of Nature (free Sat mornings); Cycle the bike paths throughout the city and into the Gatineau Hills park area; Ice skating on the Rideau Canal, a 7.8km roadway of ice in the heart of Ottawa (in winter of course) Festivals Canada Day (July 1st); Ottawa JazzFest (June 21-July 1); Bluesfest, largest in Canada; Fringe Festival (June ‘07).

Must See & Do

Changing of the Guard on Parliament Hill; Governor General's Residence; Byward Market (22 bars, restaurants, shops); eat at the The Works Burger Joint then have Beaver Tails; tour of HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel (voted the most Haunted Spot in Ottawa).

purchase bus tickets in advance to avoid higher cash fares; purchase maple syrup at Byward Market.
