Indeed one of the most picturesque countries you’ll ever visit, it is by no means an extension of England. Scotland is known for its beautiful highlands, castles, clans and offers a variety of outdoor activities including rock climbing, white water rafting and even snowboarding in the winter. The Highlands are a must see, as are the many lochs, castles and former battlefield sites that adorn Scotland’s countryside. Don’t miss Inverness, Fort William, Loch Ness, Aberdeen, the Isle of Skye, and Eilean Donan Castle. There are a host of great tour companies that can get you around Scotland without making a dent in your budget.

Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and most famous for the legends of the Loch Ness Monster and the lesser known Big Lassy (you’ll find out boys). There is tons on offer here including stunning scenery, lots of lochs and glens, castles and the Culloden Battlefield.

A trip to the Isle of Skye is highly recommended. Plan on staying at least 2 nights so you can catch the excellent day tour available around 11am-noon, daily. Most hostels are located in Kyleakin and only a few minutes’ walk from the ferry drop off. By day you can rent a bike, hike, take a nature boat tour or explore other parts of the Island. At night, join or start a pub crawl - there are only 2 or 3 pubs, all within a stone’s throw of each other.

Oban is a quaint seaside town on the West Coast of Scotland, north of Glasgow and south of Fort William. It is a good place to stop on your way back to Edinburgh or Glasgow from the Highlands. On offer are boat trips, ferries to nearby Islands including Mull, and the Oban Distillery.
