Should I pay a hostel booking fee when Backpacking around Europe?

I'm from Malaysia.Do I need a VISA to travel to Europe for 15 days?
Hi, Im a single girl and want to go on a two week holiday in August(flexible with dates). Im fun and out going and LOVE staying in hostels and meeting new people but I also want to veg in the sun, nice beaches etc.. As Im going on my own (first hol on own) I want somewhere safe that I would feel comfortable walking aorund. I have also taking up surfing recently so would be nice to do a bit of that maybe? I looked into surf camps in Portugal and there 400-500+ for a week. I havent lots of money so im trying to keep the cost as low as possible but still have a good holiday. Im starting to panic a bit as Im leaving it a bit late now. Im usually very organised :/ Last minute decision...help?? X :)
Hi Sandra,
Assuming you are from the UK (from your email address), I would suggest San Sebastian in Spain. You can surf, stay in hostels and still enjoy great night. Check out the following hostel that offers beds and surfing lessons and information. The link is to our sister site, HostelDiscounts. com.

You can also go to Barcelona and stay at a hostel by the sea called the Sea Point Hostel. There isnt really any surf but you're on the Mediterranean and 10 minutes from Las Ramblas. Here is the link.

I hope that helps. Enjoy your vacation.
Happy Travels Bakpak Dave
Your site is quite clear on the 90-day visa rule for Europe (for USA citizen). But a backpack trip can be (and will be) much longer. Do I have to get a visa from one or more countries in advance? Or can I simply renew the 90-day visa somehow every few months while there?
Hi Dave, my name is Fernando im from Mexico, i will travel to Europe in February 2010 for a month, how many clothes should i take ? for that time, i now thtas gonna be cold
Hey Fernando, thanks for writing. It depends on how fussy you are with clothes. I would say bring enough clothes for a week and plan on doing laundry a few times. For Feb in Europe, 3 pairs of jeans, some long sleeve shirts, windbreaker/light rain jacket, a sweater, some t-shirts, etc. It also depends on where in Europe you will be. Hope that helps.
Hey, If Im backpacking through Europe in the middle of Winter, is it nessesary to pre-book all accom? I mean, I assuming its not gunna be too busy. Part of the fun is not knowing where Im gunna end up...but i dont wont to be left out in the frezzing cold! What to you think?
Hey Emily,
You definitely have more flexibility in the winter to leave accommodation open and I commend you on wanting to keep things open and spontaneous. That's the best way to travel in my opinion. You might meet some cool travel mates and change your destination last minute. Why lose booking fees or deposits? The caveat might be weekends, holidays or if there is a place you really want to stay and its a small, cozy place, you might consider checking availability at the least. hope this helps!
My friend and I are travelling to europe between the months of June and August in 2010. We live in Seattle, and plan to go to France. Will it be cheaper to buy tickets now or closer to June?
Hi Lilly,
Thanks for writing. You will be traveling during the busiest time of year in Europe, particularly August. Right now you can probably get deals for winter in Europe but not likely to any deals for summer in Europe. I'd explore airfares now to get an idea of what the going rate is now eg. I just checked Air France for early June departures and it was at least $700 each way. That's too expensive. I would look to see what specials come out in early 2010. Also I would have in mind a fare that you think is reasonabe and affordable so you dont price yourself out too late in the planning. Hope this helps, Bakpak Dave
hi Dave , im from Malta a small island in the mediterranean. im planning on going on a backpacking trip with my girlfriend in summer 2011 and plan to spend around 2,500 euros whilst visiting 13 countries, is this a little over ambitious for my budget or is fine since my flight will cost a little over 35 euros??
Hi Macky,
thanks for asking your question. I have a few questions for you before I can say if your budget is reasonable. You've aleady said you know its a bit ambitious so lets find out more.
first, is it $2500 euros each or total? How many days/weeks/months do you want to travel? will you be staying in dorm rooms or private rooms at hostels? how are you getting around? let me know and then we can get a better idea.
thanks
Bakpak Dave!
My son and I will be traveling to Newcastle, England this Summer. We will be packpacking from there to Whitby via steamtrain, Holy Island to Scotland and what to go to Ireland. Do you know the cost approximately, for a round trip flight to Dublin and back. We will be staying in hostels or back yards for about a week. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thx
Hi Clyde,
thanks for writing and happy new year.
you asked about the cost of a rountrip flight to Dublin and back but did not state where you are departing from. Let me know and I can get you further info. If you are looking for r/t flights between England or Scotland and Dublin, you can check out ryanair.com for very cheap flights as low as a few pounds each way.
thanks Bakpak Dave
Hey Dave,
I'm backpacking solo for the first time in the Scandinavian countries in April for 2 weeks. My major concern is what to bring and my limits of what I can carry. Is it that inconvenient to bring a backpack and a carry-on? If I go shopping, is it easy/convenient enough to find a shipping service to send back home to the States?
Hi Darus,
Thanks for contacting me. When you ask is it inconvenient to bring a backpack and a carry-on, do you mean like a daypack?
Since you are only going for two weeks, you can lighten your clothing load a bit, with something to keep you warm at night. you could do laundry once on your trip. That way, you can leave room for purchases. Rather than use a shipping service, you might consider buying or bringing a second smaller foldable duffel that you can fill with your purchases and check in on the plane. even if there is a bag fee it will probably be cheaper than shipping service.
It all depends on what your activites will be, what you want to buy, etc. But I still think carrying a backpack is much more convenient than a rolling suitcase.
Hope that helps and let me know if you have additional questions.
cheers, Bakpak Dave
