Boston is known as Beantown, but you won’t have to hold your breath here. Huge college town, crazy place to drive, lots of Irish. Boston is also known for its New England Clam Chowder and its New England Aquarium.

3.5hrs north of New York City on I-95, 10 hrs south east of Toronto, 6 hrs south of Montreal and 18.5 hours east of Chicago.

Coach & Rail

Greyhound South Station (700 Atlantic Ave, 617-526-1801) New York ($35, 4.5hrs), Montreal ($68, 7hrs). Amtrak Back Bay (Summer & Atlantic) & South Stations (800-872-7245), catch the “T” from South Station or Back Bay Station to points in Boston. Mac America Northeast Rail Pass.

From the Airport

Public Transport take free shuttle bus (#22 or #33) from the airport to the Airport Blue line T stop ($2, to the city). Water Taxi $10 boats you across the bay, catch the free #66 bus from the terminal to the taxi launch

Getting Around

The “T” ($2, 617-222-3200), Boston’s four color-coded line subway system (red, green, orange and blue). Get a LinkPass $9 1-day; $15 7-day unlimited travel on T, buses

Free Things to See & Do

Museum of Fine Arts (465 Huntington Ave) free Weds 4-9:45pm. Japanese Gardens behind museum free admission everyday. Free info and maps at visitor info booth on Park Street, at the entrance to Boston Common. Freedom Trail Boston’s most famous self-guided walking tour stretches 2.5-miles/4-km, starts at 15 State Street opposite the Old State House. Institute of Contemporary Art free Thurs 5-9pm (955 Boylston Street) Irish Heritage Trail 3 hour self-guided walking tour. Starts at Rose Kennedy Garden along the waterfront (free maps at Boston Commons visitor booth) USS Constitution Tours free guided tours from the US Navy of the oldest US warship, from 1797 (1 Constitution Road, Charlestown Naval Yard).
