Red Rock Canyon

At Red Rock Canyon Nat’l Conservation Area, just 18 miles west of the Strip, lie approximately 200,000 acres of stunning red sandstone arches rising up to 3000 feet into the air. The visitor’s center is an excellent source of maps and information about hiking in the area. There’s also a 13 mile scenic drive ($5/vehicle) that allows you to see most of the canyon’s majesty.

Lake Mead and Hoover Dam

Just an hour drive down Highway 93 from Vegas lies the majestic Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. Completed in 1936, its blockade of the Colorado River formed the 100 mile plus long lake. Good for all water sports, from fishing to scuba diving, the 500 miles of shore line that border Lake Mead are among the most pristine in the world to be found so near a heavily touristed area. Lake Mojave, formed by the smaller Davis Dam, is also here. The Alan Bible Visitor Center (702-293-8990) offers tours of the Dam and power plant within.

Valley of Fire State Park

37,000 acres of up to 600 million year old red sandstone rock formations lie at the north end of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The park is open to dusk. Cost $6/day, with camping sites available for $14/day. 1 hr north of Vegas on I-15. Visitor Center is in the park. (702) 397-2088.
