San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s a place to see by foot. Gotta love those wicked hills! There are so many interesting areas and sites, with great views of the bay and city that are free, you can save your money for food and drink.

6hrs north of Los Angeles off I-580 from I-5, 15hrs south of Seattle, 10.5hrs west of Salt Lake City.

From the Airport
Public Transport SFO, Air Train from terminals to BART Yellow/Red line ($5, get off at 24th/Mission St. for Mission District hostels; Civic Center/Powell or Montgomery stops for most other hostels/hotels); Oakland, take AirBart to BART to stops listed above. Shuttle SuperShuttle from $15. Taxi $32-40 to downtown, a little less to Mission District.
Getting Around
BART (415-989-2278) underground rail lines that serve the city and East Bay (Berkeley/Oakland). Cost per trip is based on distance traveled. San Francisco MUNI (415- 673-MUNI) buses & streetcars ($1.50), cable cars ($5/trip, $11 1-day pass), best way to get around the city, MUNI Passport for 1 ($11), 3 ($18) or 7 ($24) unlimited days.
Free Things to See & Do
Walk down Lombard Street (crooked street, start at top of hill at Hyde Street). Coit Tower at the top of Telegraph Hill. Yuerba Buena Gardens contained within Mission, Folsom, Third and Fourth Streets in the SOMA district. Presidio take the free, hop on, hop off PresidiGo Around the Park Shuttle to see the highlights of the Presidio including the Palace of Fine Arts. Take MUNI bus 45 from Union Square area to Presidio gate. San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut St).
Must See & Do
Explore all the great neighborhoods; walk/bike across Golden gate Bridge; Alcatraz Tour from Pier 41 (book in advance during summer); take the 49-mile Scenic Drive; Cable car ride; Coit Tower during day and on clear night; Twin Peaks for great city views; check out the Seals hanging out at Pier 39.

Buy a MUNI-pass 1-7 days or a 1-day Cable Car pass. Asian Art Museum $5 Thur
