Nestled in a wooded setting less than 10 minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge, Hostelling International's Marin Headlands Hostel provides more than unique, affordable accommodations in two historic 1907 buildings.

It offers a chance to get away, wind down, and enjoy the simple treasures of a coastal National Park.

A certified green business, the Marin Headlands Hostel offers dorm rooms (4-9 beds), single/double private rooms, and private rooms for families (up to two adults and two children) with shared bathrooms. The hostel also provides guests with fully equipped kitchens, cozy guest lounges, on-site laundry, free parking, and access to internet facilities. Equipment for both entertainment and comfort -- from Frisbees and footballs to flashlights and alarm clocks -- are also available for rental at the front office.

The turn-of-the-century buildings at Fort Barry that house our guests are located near a broad range of landscapes for adventurers to explore, from creek side to mountainside, open meadow to crashing surf. A short walk to Rodeo Lagoon and Beach offers hikers an abundance of unspoiled wilderness teeming with native plant and animal life. Travel the scenic trails in nearby Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods National Monument on foot or bike, or take a docent-led walk to the scenic Point Bonita Lighthouse.

In addition to welcoming individual travelers, the hostel is a popular spot for weddings and won a 2002 Best of the Bay award from the San Francisco Bay Guardian for "Most Romantic Nearby Weekend Getaway." By Car

From the South: Take 101 North over the Golden Gate Bridge and exit on Alexander Avenue. Stay to the right as you exit and then drive a short distance to the first road (the road is not clearly marked, but it is called Bunker Road). Take a left onto Bunker Road until you come to a one-way tunnel. Drive through when prompted and then follow the directions under "From the Tunnel" below.

From the North: Take 101 South to the second exit for Sausalito (this is the final exit before you hit the Golden Gate Bridge). As you come off the exit, take a right toward Sausalito and then take the first left you encounter. At the one-way tunnel, drive through when prompted and then follow the directions under "From the Tunnel" below.

From the Tunnel: When you are out of the tunnel drive 2 miles west into the Headlands. At the fork in the road (Field Road), take a left and then follow the signs to the hostel. (Note: Don't be confused by the sign just before the fork in the road; it's just indicating that the beach is to the right and everything else is to the left).
